7 Things Every Jet Pump Owner Should Know

In today’s blog we would like to give you some tips that can help you save time and money when it comes to your jet pump system.

1. Swap your pressure switch with a low pressure cut off for cheap pump protection. A pressure switch with a low pressure cut off will detect when the source is dry and shut off the pump. This inexpensive option can save your pump from burning up. Write your wiring diagram on your pressure switch cap. Also, write your pressure settings on the switch cap and on your pressure tank. 2. Install a riser pipe on the jet pump for easier priming. Also, a ball valve on the discharge can ease priming by allowing you to work the air out of the pump and line.

3. Use a cycle guard or similar device to keep the pump running while using water. They help by limiting the cycles and will, in turn, extend the life of the pump.

4. Write your purchase date on all equipment so there is no question about age.

5. Keep all well related documents, like your well driller report, in a ziploc bag near your pump breaker or outlet for easy access anytime you need it for your service technician. Contact your county if you do not have a copy of your well report or, better yet, it may be accessible on their website.

6. Take an amp reading while the system is running. Be sure to keep your test method consistent. If you are using an irrigation pump without a pressure tank you could use zone 1 for amp readings to get consistent sampling data.
7. What’s in your water? Get it tested - test annually for best results, especially if you have a history of problems or are near livestock. More frequent testing should be considered if:
  1. There is a change in the taste, odor, or appearance of the well water, or if a problem occurs such as a broken well cap, inundation by floodwaters, or a new contamination source
  2. The well has a history of bacterial contamination
  3. The septic system has recently malfunctioned
  4. Family members or house guests have recurrent incidents of gastrointestinal illness
  5. An infant is living in the home, or
  6. To monitor the efficiency and performance of home water treatment equipment.
