How to Apply Teflon Tape the RIGHT Way
By: Shopify APIHow to Apply Teflon Tape the RIGHT Way
Applying Teflon tape correctly is essential for creating a tight, leak-free seal on threaded pipe connections. To apply it properly, face the threaded male end of the fitting toward you and wrap the Teflon tape in a clockwise direction, the same direction the fitting will tighten. Start wrapping at the bottom of the threads and work your way up, overlapping the tape by at least half its width with each pass. Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the pipe, ensuring the threads are evenly covered for a secure seal.

Using quality thread seal tape makes all the difference for a leak-free connection:
- BII PTFE Thread Seal Tape (Teflon) 1/2" x 520" — the go-to tape for threaded pipe connections in water and plumbing applications
Step-by-Step Instructions
Position the fitting correctly
Hold the male-threaded end of the fitting so the threads are facing you.Wrap in the correct direction
Wrap the Teflon tape clockwise, the same direction the fitting will be tightened. This prevents the tape from unraveling during installation.Start at the base of the threads
Begin wrapping at the bottom of the threads and work your way upward toward the end of the pipe.Overlap the tape evenly
Overlap each wrap by about 50% of the tape's width to ensure full coverage.Finish at the end of the pipe
Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the threads. Smooth the tape into the grooves with your fingers for a secure fit.
Where to Use (and Not Use) Teflon Tape
Teflon tape is ideal for threaded pipe connections in plumbing, water, and wastewater applications.
Do not use Teflon tape on:
- Compression fittings
- Hoses
- Fittings with O-rings or gaskets
These connections seal without thread tape and using it can cause leaks or improper sealing.
Pro Tip 💡
Leave the first thread at the end of the pipe exposed. This makes it easier to start threading the fitting and helps prevent cross-threading.
